The Native American name for the area meant, “Land of Holes.” La Jolla has nothing to do with holes though. Some believe it’s a derivation of the Spanish word la joya which means jewel, thus the cities nickname of “Jewel City.” La Jolla Cove is a part of the San Diego/ La Jolla Underwater Park, a marine refuge area great area for snorkelers and scuba divers. The Cove is known for resident wild seals and sea lions. The Scripps Oceanographic Institute is a strong partner in the area. Have fun with Eric at La Jolla Cove, known for wildlife wonders, scenic sunsets and beautiful boutiques.
